PLAY YARD TAKE TWO!!!! If you refer back to the earlier picture taken a few days ago you will notice that this is a different play yard. Two days ago I had placed Mackenzie in her play yard and she was not to pleased to be in there. The next thing I know is she is just about over the back of the sofa. She had climbed up the side of the play yard. So, I had to go in search of a play yard that she could not climb out of. I am hoping I have found it now. Time will tell. If it can be done I am sure she will do it.

Mackenzie is pretty big stuff now. She loves to use her walking toy to get around the room. It is fun to sit back and just watch her explore and grow.

Today I can not believe Zachary went to the doctor for his 5 year old checkup to get all of his shot so he can start school in three weeks. He is in the 50th % for height and 75th% for weight. I think he eat very good while Maw Maw and Paw Paw were in charge. Mackenzie also had a checkup. She is right on track in her development. Dr. Stage says she is healthy. He does want her to gain a little weight. She is 16 lbs which makes her in less than the 3rd %. She is 29 inches long and in the 45th % in height. I am so happy that both of our children are happy and healthy.

I just love our kids. They make me smile everyday.

This picture is a little out of order, but I wanted to share this picture with everyone. One of our friends that was also adopting in our group took this picture of Mackenzie just as she was being carried into the room to meet us for the first time. We were the second family to be matched that day. It was such an emotional time that I didn't realize we did not have any pictures ourselves of that moment until our friend sent us this picture. I love having this picture but it does bring tears to my eyes everytime I look at it because I just see how scared my perfect little girl was at that moment. It also makes me smile because that was the moment our family was complete.

Zachary was so excited that Ryan was also at the wedding. They had fun trying to catch tadpoles and frogs.

Today was Zachary's teacher's wedding. This was the first time Mackenie let us put her down in the grass. We had tried putting her down before and wanted nothing to do with it. We are making progress. She was still not to sure about the grass though.

It has been two weeks that we have been home. I am not sure why I was so worried I would not be able to handle being a mother of two. All you have to do is put them both in one place that they can not get out of. The truth ia Mackenzie really doesn't like to be in the playyard unless Zachary is in there with her. Zachary being the good big brother is he spent about a hour in there with her, so that I could get the kitchen clean. I am so proud of my big boy and how great he is with Mackenzie.

This is a picture of all of the little girls that were adopted in our group. I fell in love with the all. The little one that Mackenzie is sitting next to is the only other little girl from her orphanage. Mai is two weeks older than Mackenzie so, they have been together for the past year.

It didn't take Paw Paw long to figure out how to win Mackenzie over. Just feed her. I am not sure how she is only 15.5 pounds with as much as she eats.

My mom is the greatest mom in the world. She not only took perfect care of my five year old son for 17 days she also painted the most perfect sceene on Mackenzie's wall. When I showed her the picture of the panda wall I wanted in Mackenzie's room I had no idea how wonderful it would turn out. Zachary and Mackenzie are so lucky to have the best Maw Maw ever.

This is Mackenzie's first time setting foot in the United States of America. We had just landed in San Fransico.
We have been home for just over a week now. When we set foot in the San Fransico Airport it was the best feeling ever. I have always known it was great to be living in the USA but, now I have a much better apprication for the freedoms we have here. Plus you never know what you are missing until you have to go without something. While we were in China we couldn't have ice in our drinks, we couldn't drink tap water or even just brush our teeth without sing bottled water.

Even though China is not a country that I would ever want to live in, I have to thank the Chinese Government for allowing us to enter their county to receive our precious little girl and bring her home.

The surprises did not end at the airport. Uncle Dan, Aunt Shelly and Lucas surprised us at the house. I could not even begin to express how much that meant to me to have them here to welcome our little girl home for the first time. I was also told that Aunt Robyn would have been right there with them but some other family events kept her from being here. But, I know it was killing her not being here. Have I mentioned what a great and supportive family we have.

It was also really nice of David's family to come and greet us at the airport and meet Mackenzie. They were so understanding, we were so tired from traveling that we only stayed at the airport for a very short time. We had been traveling for over 30 hours.

Maw Maw and Paw Paw surprised us by having Zachary waiting at our gate when we got off the plane. As you can see I was totally surprised. Poor David was still in the breeze way waiting for our stroller. I also left him with all of our carry on bags. Mackenzie loved Zachary the minute she saw him. We had been showing her pictures of Zachary while we we in China. If you asked her to find Zachary she would turn to his picture. It would make me smile everytime she would do it.

I love this picture that Maw Maw took as our plane was pulling up to the gate. Thanks Maw Maw for capturing this wonderful moment for me.

Maw Maw took this picture of Zachary making the sign that was hanging on the garage when we arrived home from the airport. He also had balloons hanging across the front of the garage.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

Happy 4th of July to everyone!

Independence and freedom take on a whole new meaning. Being here on this day and being able to reflect on what our adoption of Mackenzie will ultimately mean to her in terms of independenc, freedom and opportunity has allowed us to celebrate this day without the traditional bbq, fireworks and other traditional activities.

I will try and post about our tour of historic budist temple, art museum and dinner atan American restaurant later.

Here are 2 pictures of Mackenzie taken today on our 4th of July outings.

Picture of Mackenzie and Lisa

This picture was posted in the prior blog post, but it did not appear in the actual blog. I suspect that government filters are interfearing with posting. I have also noticed some word and letter scramble that I suspect has a similar origin as the original draft of the post did not have the issues appearing on the blog.

WE HAVE ARRIVED IN GUANGZHOU

Yesterday (Friday, July 2) we checked out of our hotel in Nanning and had to wait until 700PM for our flight to Guangzhou. We did a lot of waiting yesterday. Waiting for the bus to arrive a t the hotel, waiting for travel documents for Mackenzie and waiitng for our plane at the airport.

We went to Chinese government building on our way to the airport and we received Mackenzie's Chinese passport. Now we just need to work on US adoption, US Visa approavl and other logistics with US government whcih all will be done from Guangzhou.

We arrived in Guangzhou and were taken to our hotel. By the time we made it to our room it was after 1100PM and we were not adequately prepared or instructed on what to expect and we did not have sufficient food for Mackenzie nor had dinner been arraned prior to departure or after arrival. Tempers were frayed amongst many of our traveling companions, but Lisa Mackenzie and I decided it was best to just go up to our room and collapse for the night.

We had heard and seen a great deal about our hotel in Guangzhou and it was nice tofinally arrive here. We were slightly spoiled by our representative in Nanning (David). He was very organized and in his dealings with over 3000 adoption families he was often able to anticipate what we would need and have it waiting in our room. With the bar set very high, we had great expections for a superior hotel and hoped that having 2 representatives here in Guangzhou everything would go wonderfully. Our representatives here are good, but they are not what we had come to enjoy while in Nanning.

The hotel is beautifl with a large atrium in the center of the lobby with a 2 plus story waterfall into a pond that seperates the dinning room from the lobby area. The rooms are very nice. There is a play room for adopting families with toys rovided and replaced by Mattel. Mattel even gives a special Barbie to the each adopting family of a US Barbie holding a Chinese baby. Lisa was super excited when she received the Barbie.

Today we had to go to the government clinic and have Mackenzie checked to make sure she was healthy. The clinic was wall to wall people and was choas. Thankfully, the clinic only took less than 2 hours as we were told it could be as long as 3 hours and with the temperature in excess of 90 degrees and near 90 percent humidity today in agovernment building with inadequate ventilation, it was a very unpleasant place to be. As we expected, Mackenzie is fine and fit to travel to the US.

We do not have any major adoption activities for the next couple of days. We have a sight seeing tour planned for the daytime tomorrow (July 4th) and there is some talk about going to an American restaurant called Lucy's for dinner tomorrow. There is no big activity to recognize the 4th.

Mackenzie is doing really well and is bonding with us and really opening up, smiling more, complaining more, showing her impatience, but she is starting to be more willing to get down on the fllor and play with toys for short periods. She is even willing to get in the stroller for breif periods when we are walking.

Internet restrictions are not any better here. i will try and keep up on activites and post a picture or two.

Wednesday and Thursday Around Nanning City

Yesterday and today (Wednesday and Thursday) we had no official activities as we are waiting for Mackenzie's Chinese passport and to receive officia original Chinese adoption documents.

Yesterday we went by bus to Nanning's oldest park, locally know as People's Park. the park is very centrally located in a busy urban district. The park is very busy and has a very nice sidewal lined with lush vegetation. At the center of the park is a lake and an amusment park with rides more resembling a traveling carnival.

Many of the elder people come to the park in the morning and do various activities from tai chi to singing and dancing. As we walked the park many local people wanted to talk to us and aeven a group of 4 musicians stopped our group and asked to sing a song wishing good fortune to us and our new daughters.

It was interesting going to the carnival as we became a carnival attraction. Local people do not see many western travelers here and they are intrigued by our fair skin and different look. If we would stop any any location for more than a minute or two several locals would surrond us and want to talk to us mainly in chinese and take pictures of us (everyone seems to have a cell phone with a camera).

The environment is rather warm and humid as Nanning is just north of the equater and south of the tropic of cancer. Nanning is a "small" city by China standars although it is a city of 6 plus million prople. It is the import export hub for trade with Vietnam, as we are less than 50 miles from the Vietnam border. The vegatation is very lush and tropical. After being outside for any length of time it becomes rather uncomfortable.

After our visit to the park we wentepresentative enjoys going to with his family and friends. A traditional chinese dinner table is round and has a lazy susan where food is placed and spun around the table to be served. Out table accomodated 24 adults and was about 8 to 10 feet across and the lazy suan covered about 80 percent of the table top. Our representative ordered food and we had a very wide selection. One interesting thing about eating here is when you order multiple dishes as a family, Cantonese tradition is that the food comes out one item at a time so you do not have a very large plate and you may only have 1 or 2 items on your plate at a time. Towards the end of your meal there may be multiple items on the table if the whole dish was not eaten on the first pass. One other item of note is they do not have soy sauce on the table and when asking our representative about this he said it is something we do in the US but that is not tradition here.

Today we went on a bus ride and went ourside the city to the coutryside to visit a traditional village. The village we went to is in Laling which is located in a mountainous region about 45 minutes to 1 hour oaise utside of Nanning. It was interesting watching the transition from metropolitan city to 3rd world agricultural area. the village we went to is a community of about 3,000 people who do not have running water. Many live in single story row houses that are very small. They raise many items for consumption from corn and other vegetables and they raise rice to sell. They use cows to pull carts to haul carts for supplies and deliverying rice to sell. The cow is on a lead and walked by the farmer (we saw both male and females) leadiung the cows and carts.

The village has multiple ponds and they raise fish for their consumption. they have a pump system to pump the water from one pond to an adjacent pond and as the pond gets near empty the retrive the fish and eel with small nets on a long bamboo pole. They hand scoop the top layer of mud and place it in buckets and carry the mud to the field as fertilizer.

Near the center of the village there is a "clean" water supply for thge village. This supply is river and the water is diverted by a concrete channel where it spills out into a concrete pool about 1 foot deep over about a 40 sqyare foot area that is lined with concret and stairs going down to the water. Kids and adults play in the water and they also fill jugs from this water to take back to their homes to consume. This pond holding area is lined with algea and other stuff, but unlike the other ponds, you can see the bottom surface.

Prior to getting to the village we stopped at a roadside market and all bought bags of candy and as we walked thru the village we handed candy to the elderly and the childgren. They were very appreciative and enjoyed seeing us and wanted to pose for pictures and talk to the babies.

After returning from the village Lisa Mackenzie and I along with one other family went for a walk in a nearby park that is buile around a lake and has lots of manicured lush vegetation and a large bonzi tree garden. The park has many ficus and palm trees as well as other tropical plants. The locals there found us intriguing and would photograph us as we went by. They even stopped to take a picture of Lisa and Cathy taking a picture in the park.

Tomorrow evening we travel to Guangzhou where we will remain until July 10. We are a little nervous about the upcoming flights and especially nervouse about car seats.

Mackenzie is opening up much more and becming more relaxed. She is talking alot and she is laughing and much more engaging. She is not that interested in playing on the floor and will not go in a stroller. She constantly wants to be held and does not like to be put down, have her diaper changed or to have clothes taken on or off. She will eat most anything ouput in her mouth, but she will not feed herself or held her bottle. She likes conje (rice soup) and loves traditional noodles.

We will try and update more later. I wil try and post some pictures (which I can not do directly due to censorship ) and even updating this blog is a challenge and cannot be done directly.
